Italian public broadcaster under fire after showing images of cable car accident

In Italy, the public broadcaster Rai has been discredited because it broadcast camera images of the fatal cable car accident at Lake Maggiore last month. The images were from security cameras.

You can see how the gondola in question is lifted up to the last stop. Just before the gondola reaches the platform, a cable gives way and the gondola sinks with great speed and crashes. Fourteen of the fifteen people on board were killed in the accident, only a 5-year-old boy survived the crash.

The images – on which the gondola itself has been blurred – were first seen on the Rai 3 channel and were subsequently picked up by other Italian media, writes. de BBC. The images are also in circulation on social media, but the victims are recognizable on them.

The director of the broadcaster has said he is “very shocked” that the images have been broadcast. The prosecutor who is conducting the criminal investigation has also condemned the display of the images. According to her, relatives of the victims were not aware of the existence of the footage. Politicians have also reacted indignantly.

The Italian newspaper La Stampa, however, remained behind the decision to publish the images. According to the newspaper, “the footage is worth 1000 words” and also shows that the accident could have been prevented if the emergency brakes had been in order.

According to police and justice, the accident could have happened because the safety system of the cable car was tampered with. A braking system that had to be activated in an emergency was allegedly deactivated by three suspects. The three are detained.
