Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will submit his resignation on Tuesday, reports the news agency Reuters. Conte is expected to forge a new coalition with an absolute majority in the Italian parliament. Conte lost it last week when a smaller party ended the collaboration.
The so-called Italia Viva party is said to have left the coalition out of dissatisfaction with the corona policy. The country’s poor economic condition is also said to have been a thorn in the side of Matteo Renzi’s party, the former Prime Minister of Italy.
Conte is expected to convene his cabinet on Tuesday to inform ministers about his decision, spokesmen for the prime minister report. It does not mean that new elections are called automatically. President Sergio Mattarella can also offer Conte the opportunity to forge a new coalition. In addition, the president can promote a government of national unity.
The loss of Conte’s majority in the Italian parliament was described by Italian media as “a crisis” last week. After all, the opposition can then hold back or delay decision-making, which is undesirable during a pandemic.
Renzi’s decision to pull the plug on the coalition did not come out of the blue. The former prime minister regularly clashed with Conte about how the billions of euros from European aid packages should be spent. The Italia Viva party wants to see more money for healthcare, culture and infrastructure.
