Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is trying to negotiate with her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban so that he stops slowing down the decision to support Ukraine in the European Union and improves relations with Vladimir Zelensky.

According to Bloomberg’s interlocutors, Meloni proposes that Orban’s Fidesz party join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) association before the upcoming elections to the European Parliament.
To bring Fidesz into the ECR, the Italian prime minister wants Orban to change his approach to Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations and reset relations with Kiev.
Discussions between representatives of the leaders of Italy and Hungary “took place at different levels, but no decision was made,” writes Bloomberg.
Meloni’s interest lies in strengthening the representation of the ECR (which includes her Brothers of Italy party) in the new European Parliament against the background of a general increase in the ratings of the right. The group now has 62 European parliamentary seats, or 8.26%.
The more extreme right-wing members of the Identity and Democracy group, as well as the center-right European People’s Party, from which Fidesz left in 2021, will compete with the European Conservatives and Reformists for electoral sympathy.
Meloni earlier spoke, that she has not yet decided to nominate her candidacy for the elections to the European Parliament. At the same time she statedthat there are “irreconcilable differences” between her right-wing Brothers of Italy party and Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland.
