Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of humiliating European Commission President Ursula von der Layen at their summit yesterday, Reuters reported.

Von der Layen and European Council President Charles Michel met with Erdogan in Ankara yesterday. The President of the European Commission was openly ignored when the two men sat down to the only two prepared chairs, and there was room for her on the next sofa, which shocked many MEPs and high-ranking officials of the European Union.

“I strongly disagree with Erdogan’s behavior towards President Von der Layen. I think this behavior is inappropriate and I am very upset by the humiliation that Von der Layen has endured,” Draghi told reporters.

“With these, let’s say, dictators with whom we have to interact anyway, we must be honest when expressing different views or opinions,” he added. / BTA
