Abu Dhabi, October 26 / WAM / The Italian national team was crowned champion of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Judo Championship 2023, which concluded this evening (Thursday) at the “Mubadala Arena” hall in Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.
The tournament was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, with the support of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the supervision of the International Judo Federation.
The tournament, whose prize money amounted to 154,000 euros, witnessed the participation of 450 male and female players representing 77 top-ranked countries in the world, in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The judo team won two bronze medals in the “lightweight” and “lightweight” categories, and was ranked first in the Arab world and 19th internationally, in addition to obtaining many qualification points for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The final round of the tournament was attended by His Excellency Mohammed bin Thaloub Al-Darai, President of the Judo Federation and Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee, Marius Weiser, President of the International Federation, Obaid Al-Anazi, Vice-President of the International Federation, President of the Asian Federation, Abdul Mohsen Al-Dosari, Member of the Board of Directors of the Football Association, and Faris Al-Mutawa, Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee. And Arif Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
The opening round of the heavyweight competition witnessed the loss of the player Aram Gregory in the preliminary round of the “under 90 kg” weight to the Romanian champion Alex Crete, while Dhofar Kostevo defeated the American champion Smith Elie in the “under 100 kg” weight, and qualified to face the German Odesilori George in the match. The round of 16, and he succeeded in defeating him, before losing to Adamian Arman, the player of the (Neutrals) singles team, then he lost again to the Austrian Fara Aron in the consolation round to compete for the bronze due to an injury to his shoulder.
The player Marouf Omar opened his career in the “over 100 kg” qualifiers by defeating the Icelandic champion Steft Karl, then he defeated the Kazakhstan player Kribay Galimzan, before losing by a tactical error to the German champion Kuni Losini, then he lost the opportunity to play for the bronze in the consolation play-off by losing from Georgian player Nashville Saba.
On the other hand, the Judo Federation’s activity will continue the day after tomorrow (Saturday) in the “Sorbonne University” hall in the Al Reem area in Abu Dhabi, which hosts the World Kata Championship with the participation of 288 male and female players from 35 countries, in addition to the “Veterans” Championship next Tuesday, which achieved the record in the history of championships after… Announcing the participation of 1,054 male and female players from 65 countries.
