Italian motorsport legend Carlo Ubjali has passed away

The ninth World Cup died in his hometown of Bergamo.

Ubjali won his titles in the period from 1951 to 1960 – six in the 125 cubic centimeter class and three in the 250 cubic centimeter class. In Italy, he was later followed by Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rosi.

“There weren’t many TV shows at the time, so I got the information from the newspapers. They described Ubjali and the motorcycle as a whole,” Agostini recalls his childhood idol.

“I was ten years old when he won them all and I dreamed of one day becoming the same as him. He was an example and a source of inspiration for me. He drove like a real champion – intelligently and cunningly,” says Agostini, 77.

Ubjāli shares the third place in the list of the most titled champions of the motocross with nine world trophy trophies with Rosi and British Mike Heilvood. The most titled with 15 trophies is Agostini, but 13 champion titles are for the Spanish Angel Njeto.

Ubjali won his first title with the “Mondial” team, but MV Agusta was the other success.

Ubjāli was the last living motorcyclist to experience the beginnings of the World Motorcycle Championship in 1949. During his career, the Italian legend never suffered any injuries in the competition, interrupting the athlete at the age of 31.
