Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Ahead of the final Euro 2020, a number of Italian media claimed that there was a UEFA conspiracy to deliberately make England national team tournament champion.
A clear claim was made by the newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport, which stated that UEFA’s conspiracy to win England as champions of Euro 2020 was related to British officials’ rejection of the European Super League (ESL).
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and British Health Minister Sajid Javid have expressed support for UEFA following the formation of the ESL by a number of major European clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea of England.
“In a Euro tournament organized and arranged for England, it is not surprising that such a generous penalty launched Gareth Southgate’s team into their first final in 55 years,” wrote La Gazzetta Dello Sport. The Sun.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport later wrote that the Euro 2020 title for England was a proper response from UEFA for the support provided by Boris Johnson.
“For England it is a home tournament, but they have to play against Italy and they are worried. Roberto Mancini has to take two things into account: the consistency of the opponent and the political wind that blows.”
“British Prime Minister Boris Johnson goes down in history as the man who saved European football. A payback [dari UEFA] would be logical. We may think badly, we may sin, but it is better than being stupid,” wrote La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
This conspiracy arose from the controversy that occurred in the Euro 2020 semifinal between England vs Denmark. England won 2-1 after referee Danny Makkelie gave a controversial penalty.
Interestingly, it is not only the Italian media that criticize the British. Spain’s leading sports media, Marca, considers English football two-faced.
“They always say how bad it is when a foreign player tries to trick the referee by diving. In English football this doesn’t happen, other than of course in the semifinals of the European Cup. It would be nice for English football to stop lecturing the whole continent on diving, ” wrote Marca quoted from Reuters.
The Euro 2020 final Italy vs England will be held at Wembley Stadium, London, Monday (12/7) early morning WIB.
