The auto market continues to suffer from the economic situation that sees the effects of the pandemic merging with the historical moment of the sector, struggling with the energy transition and with other disturbing elements such as the lack of chips and the difficulties in supplying the logistics chain caused by the crisis of the maritime transport. In August, the traditionally “seaside” month, so come on lower sales volumes to the rest of the year, 64,689 registrations of new cars were recorded, 27.3% compared to 2020. The cumulative figure for the first eight months is better: 1,060,182 new cars against 809,978 in the same period of 2020, burdened however from the heavy lockdown. Since August, the incentives reserved for cars with CO2 emissions between 61 and 135 g / km, a category that includes many thermal, full and mild hybrid cars, were back active. The funds for cars with emissions between 0 and 20 g / km, in fact electric and plug-in hybrids, ended on 26 August, but with the sustainable infrastructure and mobility decree approved by the Council of Ministers the government moved 57 million euros of Extrabonus to the ordinary fund of the Ecobonus incentive. The resources withdrawn from the additional one, precisely the 57 million euro frozen and which were not accessible to the public separately, were thus reallocated to the main component of the incentive. Segment by segment, here are the ten best-selling cars in April according to Unrae’s calculations.

SEGMENT A: FIAT PANDA, FIAT 500 AND KIA PICANTO

Let’s start from segment A, that of city cars, a market segment that in August weighs about 17% of the total market, one percentage point more than in the same month of 2019. In terms of numbers, registrations of “small” were 10,925 against 13,145 a year earlier. The queen of small cars is always the Fiat Panda with 3,059 units, followed at a considerable distance by its sister Fiat 500, 3,022 units. Following Kia Picanto (941 units), Toyota Aygo (741), Suzuki Ignis (706), Volkswagen Up! (701), Hyundai i10 (686), Citroen C1 (428), Peugeot 108 (329. Closes the Smart Fortwo (153 units), 100% electric city car.

SEGMENT B: LANCIA YPSILON, RENAULT CAPTUR AND FORD PUMA

The B segment, that of compact cars, is becoming increasingly important and strategic for manufacturers, since the one with the greatest specific weight, partly because with city cars, profits for manufacturers are very low, partly because many motorists prefer to have a agile but more gifted and safer car. The advent of city-SUVs, then, gave new life to the seed: in August the segment accounted for 39% of the market with 24,801 registrations, in 2020 registrations were 34,356. The best-selling compact in Italy is the Lancia Ypsilon with 2,066 registrations, followed by the Renault Captur (1,942), and the Ford Puma (1,864). Followed by Toyota Yaris (1,738), Renault Clio (1,325), Dacia Sandero (1,301), Fiat 500L (970), Volkswagen Polo (968), Peugeot 2008 (893) and Volkswagen T-Cross (885).

SEGMENTO C: JEEP RENEGADE, JEEP COMPASS E FIAT 500X

Another weight market segment is the C segment, which includes compact midsize and – above all – SUVs and compact crossovers, always on the rise to the detriment of classic sedans. A segment that in August 2021 was worth 31% of the market with 20,150 registrations, while last year it counted 29,371. On the top step of the podium is the Jeep Renegade with 1,752 registrations, followed by the “sister” Jeep Compass (1,637) and the Fiat 500X (1,388). Following Volkswagen T-Roc (1,298), Dacia Duster (1,242), Peugeot 3008 (804), Fiat Tipo (857), Volkswagen Golf (712), Ford Ecosport (703) and Kia Sportage (633).

SEGMENTO D: AUDI Q3, BMW X1 E VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN

Higher up we find the D segment, that of the middle-high schools; also in this case, the classic sedans have now been outclassed by SUVs and crossovers, in line with the overwhelming tastes of motorists. The weight, compared to the total market, in August 2021 is 12% with 8,088 registrations, in 2020 there were 10,715. The most popular D-segment model is the Audi Q3 with 694 registrations, followed by the BMW X1 (527) and the Volkswagen Tiguan (477). Audi Q5 (430), Toyota Rav4 (418), Ford Kuga (400), BMW X3 (376), Alfa Romeo Stelvio (341), Cupra Formentor (308) and Tesla Model 3 (308) follow.

SEGMENT E: AUDI A6, MERCEDES GLE AND BMW 5 SERIES

The E segment is that of luxury models, once the prerogative of large sedans but now densely populated with SUVs, even if some models – especially German ones – keep up. Obviously the relative weight is very low compared to the market – 1.6% of the total with 1,028 registrations – but each unit sold is very good for the manufacturers. On the top step of the podium we find the Audi A6 with 109 units registered, then the Mercedes Gle (107) and the BMW 5 Series at 101. Complete the top ten BMW X5 (95), LR Range Rover Sport (85), BMW X6 Series (76), Mercedes Gle Coupé (64), Audi Q8 (58), Porsche Cayenne (40) and Maserati Levante (40).

SEGMENTO F: PORSCHE 911, PORSCHE TAYCAN E PORSCHE PANAMERA

Finally, the F segment, that of sports cars and much sought-after flagships. Also in this case it is a market segment that counts on small numbers – less than 1% of total sales with 193 registrations – but with great appeal and extremely profitable for car manufacturers. At the top is the stainless Porsche 911 with 31 units registered in August 2021, followed by the Porsche Taycan (28) and Porsche Panamera (19) sisters. The top ten is completed by Maserati Ghibli (18), Audi A8 (14), Mercedes S-Class (11),
