Sad news has come from Italian football. Pizza Country football legend Gianluca Vialli to die. RIP!
Vialli made his illness public in November 2018. At that time Vialli said he was cured of cancer.
However, the fear remains that the cancer will return and that is what happened in December 2021. For a year Vialli has been trying to recover from the disease for the second time.
He also left his post as assistant coach of the Italy national team last December. But God’s fate said otherwise because Vialli had to close his eyes forever, Friday (6/1/2023) afternoon WIB or morning local time.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the sad news. As a result, Serie A will hold a tribute this weekend to commemorate Vialli’s departure.
According to the FIGC, Vialli is a major figure in Italian football and played a major role in helping Italy win Euro 2020 under Mancini.
Vialli, 58, born in Cremona, began his career at Cremonese in 1980, before moving to Sampdoria in 1984. During his eight-year spell, Vialli established himself as one of Italy’s top strikers.
He also helped deliver the 1990/1991 Scudetto, three Italian Cups, the Cup Winners’ Cup and once finished as runners-up in the 1991/1992 Champions League when they lost to Barcelona in the final.
Vialli formed a lethal partnership with Roberto Mancini in Sampdoria’s forward line. Vialli then left Sampdoria for Juventus in 1992 and played there for four years.
Chelsea was Vialli’s last club before retiring in 1999. During his career, Vialli scored 259 goals in 673 appearances, including 141 for Sampdoria, 53 for Juventus and 40 for Chelsea.
Vialli’s managerial career began when he managed Chelsea on 21 February 1998 as a replacement for Ruud Gullit. He has won the FA Cup, the English League Cup, the Community Shield, the Winners Cup and the European Super Cup.
He briefly managed Watford after being sacked by Chelsea in September 2000. However, Vialli lasted just one season before retiring from coaching on 14 June 2002.
At Italy national team level, Vialli has 59 caps with a tally of 16 goals. He took part in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, as well as Euro 1992.
