Italian Influencer Chiara Ferragni Fined 1 Million Euros for Pandoro Charity Scandal

Italian influencer Chiara Ferragni has been fined 1 million euros for not transferring the proceeds from a Christmas cake to a hospital even though she had promised to do so.

The 36-year-old Ferragni is a very successful fashion influencer with almost 30 million followers. But with a campaign around the sale of the pandoro, a typical Italian cake, she put herself in a bad light.

The cake with Ferragni logo on it was sold last year. The influencer gave the impression that the proceeds would go to the children’s hospital in Turin, but that turned out not to be the case. On Instagram, the sad Ferragni speaks in a video of “a communication error”.

The hospital received a one-off donation of 50,000 euros from the cake manufacturer for the campaign. But the sale of the pandoro had no influence on the amount of the donation. Ferragni’s companies did not transfer anything to the hospital, after which she was fined by the competition authority AGCM.

Ferragni was criticized, among others, by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “Real role models are not the influencers who make money by wearing clothes and showing off bags, or by promoting expensive cakes and making people believe it is for charity,” Meloni said.

Ferragni announced on Monday that she will still transfer 1 million euros to the children’s hospital. She will appeal against the fine, which she calls “disproportionate and unjust”.
