The 58-year-old Italian was forced to leave his position “with a revolutionary effect,” according to the team’s press release, and was replaced by the Japanese Haas engineering director, Ayo Komatsu.

“I would like to start by thanking Gunther Steiner for his hard work over the past ten years and wish him good luck in the future,” team owner Gene Haas said in the statement.

The American businessman added, “As an organization, it was clear that we needed to improve our performance on the track. By appointing Ayo Komatsu as team manager, we essentially put engineering at the heart of our management.”

Steiner’s departure, a few weeks before the start of the new World Championship season, is surprising, but it is a reflection of the results of last season, which Haas finished in tenth and last place in the constructors’ standings.
