Italian government orders suspension of Calcio

The head of the Italian government Giuseppe Conte on Monday evening ordered the suspension of Serie A, among a set of measures intended to stem the epidemic of coronavirus which affects the country.

There is no reason why matches and sporting events should continue and I am thinking of the football championship. I’m sorry but all the tifosi must take note“Giuseppe Conte said at a press conference, without mentioning the cases of the Champions League or Europa League matches planned for Italy in the coming weeks, or other sports.

The government thus responded to the request of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) which had taken a decision a few hours earlier to suspend “all sporting activities, at all levels“, until April 3 to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus, and requested a decree from the Italian government to this effect, to go beyond the current decree imposing the closed-door of sports events.

On Wednesday, it was decreed that all sporting events in Italy were to be held behind closed doors until April 3. The Italian government adopted decree on Sunday exceptional measures to contain millions of Italians living in the north of the country, as well as restrictive measures covering the whole country, valid until April 3. Under the terms of this decree, sports competitions can take place in sold-out places.

But since Sunday, many voices have been raised calling for the cessation of sports competitions and in particular Serie A. The last Serie A match before the suspension took place on Monday evening and saw Sassuolo beat Brescia 3-0 .

The Italian government earlier today announced the closure of all ski resorts in the country in an attempt to stem the coronavirus epidemic in the north. “We have decided to close all ski resorts in the country tomorrow morning (Tuesday) by order of the Civil Protection“, said Minister for Regional Affairs Francesco Boccia.
