Italian Government and Italian Football Association Cooperate to Ban Shirt Number 88 Due to Nazi Salute Connotations

In a new initiative coordinated in cooperation between the Italian government and the Italian Football Association, the players of the round witch in Italy will be banned from wearing shirt number 88.

The number 88 is the numerical code for the Nazi salute or the so-called “Heil Hitler”.

In March, a fan wearing a “Lazio” shirt bearing the name “Hitlerson” and the number 88 was banned from attending the Romanian club’s matches for life.

The initiative, which is being coordinated in cooperation between the Italian government and the Italian Football League, includes the addition of a code of conduct that is compatible with the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

The initiative also calls for the suspension of matches in the event of anti-Semitic chanting or acts, similar to the way racism issues are supposed to be dealt with.

For his part, Interior Minister Matteo Bentedosi said that these steps are “a sufficient and effective response to the intolerable prejudice that is so often raised in our courts.”

“The credibility of football, which is hurt and damaged by discriminatory behavior, has a direct impact on Italian society,” adds FIFA President Gabriele Gravina.
