A CCTV news client who escaped from Naples, Italy, was wanted by the police for 11 years and disappeared. He appeared in a photo of fans celebrating the victory of his hometown football team and was finally arrested.
According to the Associated Press, the National Security Police in Naples said on August 5 that the 60-year-old man, Vincenzo Laporta, is one of the 100 most dangerous fugitives wanted by the Italian police and has been missing for 11 years. However, police spotted him in recent photos taken at a restaurant on the Greek island of Corfu.
In the photo, Laporta held the iconic sky blue scarf of the Naples football team and celebrated the team’s victory with many fans. On June 4, the Naples team won the 2022-2023 Italian Football League Championship, 33 years after the last championship.
Following this lead, the police arrested Laporta on August 4 while he was riding a scooter through the streets of Corfu. Naples police said in a statement that “a love of football and Naples” exposed him.
The police said that Laporta had a close relationship with the Naples mafia organization “Camora”. He was previously convicted in absentia of tax evasion, fraud and other crimes. Once extradited to Italy, he will serve 14 years and 4 months in prison.
Police on the Greek island of Corfu said Laporta is currently in custody pending an appeals court decision on whether to extradite him to Italy. The owner of a restaurant on the island of Corfu said that in the last month or so, Laporta has been working as the second chef in the restaurant.
