Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani on Tuesday proposed hosting the first stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2024 in Ukraine.

“The Giro d’Italia is one of the largest sporting events in our country, and it concerns other countries as well. I would like it to start in Ukraine next year. This would be a sign of attention to the country that we support in every possible way,” he said. Tajani.
Speaking at the event dedicated to the 106th anniversary of the Giro d’Italia, which starts on Saturday and will last until the end of May, the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry stressed that for Rome, sport is an instrument of foreign policy.
The Giro d’Italia is considered the second most important cycling race after the Tour de France. Although in fact the competition is Italian, the organizers have several times appointed their symbolic start abroad – in Budapest (2022), Jerusalem (2018) and Belfast (2014).
Italy has been supporting Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion last February, sending military aid and maintaining Western sanctions against Moscow.
