Fear for Gigi Riva, hospitalized since Sunday 21 January at the Cagliari hospital. As reported by La Nuova Sardegna, «Rombo di Tuono» felt ill two days ago in his house in the San Benedetto district. A sudden illness that scared the family. The intervention of the doctors was immediate and Riva, who will turn 80 on November 7, was hospitalized. Now the situation has improved, Riva is better and the situation seems to be calm.
According to the first reconstructions, the former Cagliari player – symbol of the scudetto won with the rossoblù in 1970, in the year in which he then finished second in the ’70 World Cup in Mexico – and the national team (he still holds the record of 35 goals for the blue) he underwent a series of preliminary checks from which it was decided that he will have to undergo a minor heart operation soon. In a documentary film dedicated to him he talked about his most difficult opponent: depression (“a head problem that I learned to live with. Never completely, because when it comes back it’s a bad opponent to face”), which he met early on (” in its worst form”), around the age of 30: “When I left the camp forever, from the dream that had come true and had kept the nocturnal ghosts away, within certain limits, I had to start taking stock, until always sent back there, with that word. Depression. Which I struggle to even pronounce, because it means hurting myself.”
