Italian doctor told how coronavirus affects all human organs

Clinio Mastroianni, head of the department of infectious diseases of the Roman hospital Umberto I, professor at the University of Sapienza, said that in connection with the coronavirus, they mainly talk about pneumonia, but analyzes show that COVID-19 affects all organs.

He noted that the lungs are most affected, but at the capillary level, all other organs are affected along the microvasculature.

He also noted that it remains to be studied why women are less susceptible to infection and why no infection has yet been detected among people with HIV.

Among the risk factors, Mastroianni called obesity and diabetes. In addition, the doctor noted that the high mortality rate is explained by the fact that the actual number of infected people is much higher than official data.

“There is an opinion that for every detected case of infection there are 6-10 undetected cases,” the expert noted.

He called it important to conduct not only tests for the coronavirus itself, but also to do a tomographic examination of the lungs for patients, since a swab of the throat can give a negative result, while the lungs are actually affected.
