Announcement

The Italian Communications Authority (Agcom) announced the imposition of a fine of 5.8 million euros ($6.4 million) on the “Meta” group (Facebook and Instagram) for violating a law prohibiting the publication of advertisements for gambling and chance games.

The authority indicated in a statement that it “imposed, during its session on December 20, a fine on the +Meta Platforms Ireland Limited group + in the amount of 5,850,000 euros for violating a decision prohibiting advertisements related to games of chance and gambling.”

The authority noted “the presence of other promotional or advertising content, including something indirect, related to games or bets from which the user may make profits, in 18 accounts (5 on Instagram and 13 on Facebook), in addition to 32 advertising content.”

Since 2018, Italian law has prohibited “any form of advertising related to games or bets with winnings, as well as gambling games, even if they are indirect,” in the media, via billboards and digital platforms, including social media networks.

The giant American technology company, for which Europe is a major market, was fined several times, specifically for violating European data protection law and not processing data related to minors.

The Italian Communications Authority recently fined YouTube and Twitch for the same reasons.
