Italian Climate Activists Fined 30,000 Euros for Gluing Themselves to Vatican City Statue

Two Italian climate activists each have to pay nearly 30,000 euros in fines from the court in Vatican City. They had glued themselves to the plinth of a famous statue in the Vatican Museums.

In August, the activists used super glue to stick to the Laocoön group, a statue of a Trojan priest being strangled by snakes along with his two sons. The statue is made of marble and is probably over two thousand years old.

The judge finds that the activists must pay compensation for the use of the glue on the old statue. In addition, they received suspended prison sentences of nine months.

The two convicts are members of the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation). That group also made headlines a few weeks ago when members turned the water of the Trevi Fountain black by throwing in a liquid containing charcoal.
