Italian authorities have banned a Palestinian student organization’s planned anti-Israel demonstration in Rome on Saturday.
The authorities have decided that the demonstration planned under the slogan “Stop the Genocide of the Palestinian People” should take place on a different date than Saturday, when the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated.
On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, where the Nazis killed 1.1 million people, most of whom were Jews, during World War II.
Several organizers said they planned to protest in the streets of Rome despite the ban. In their call to follow their example, they clearly referred to Holocaust Remembrance Day. They criticized the fact that this genocide is commemorated while “the ongoing genocide is met with indifference”.
A pro-Palestinian rally scheduled for Saturday was also banned in Milan.
