A call that has been published on the web Zachranmecesko.cz, points out that the number of critical cases in the Czech Republic is growing exponentially and at the same time the number of infected doctors and nurses is growing exponentially. “The overload of the health system is almost certainly approaching, for small hospitals in the horizon of days, for large hospitals in the horizon of weeks. As a result, standard health care will also be reduced, “the document warns.
“If there is no dramatic change in behavior, according to our estimates, the epidemic may have 5,000 to 15,000 victims by the end of the year,” reads the call, signed by IKEM’s chief epidemiologist Petr Smejkal, Charles University’s vice-rector for science and research Jan Konvalinka. nuclear engineer Dana Drábová or data scientist and consultant Petr Ludwig.
“Already in the spring, we started working as a group of experts from various fields, who were already working at that time on why good veils are, how they work. And we made a video at the time, which went a lot into the world and promoted the veils on the basis of the scientific basis that they work, “says Petráček, who was a guest of the program Events, Comments.

“We need to look at it responsibly”
Researchers are therefore urging people to introduce a “personal lockdown”, that is, to leave their homes only when absolutely necessary. They also appeal to the need to wear veils in all indoor spaces and also outdoors in places where it is not possible to keep a distance from others.
“At the moment, it seems that according to the data and what can be seen in the media or on the streets, people are not following the measures required by the veils. After all, it worked in the spring when people used it as much as possible. That also means outside, “he continues.
“We tried to show the need to look at it responsibly. That in fourteen days in three Sundays, what we are doing now will be reflected. So that we can each do something for ourselves, for example, that will help a lot, “he added.

On the other hand, a petition was recently signed for the abolition of measures against the spread of coronavirus, signed by, among others, the President of the Czech Dental Chamber Roman Šmucler, cardiac surgeon Jan Pirk and other doctors. They consider the restrictions to be meaningless, they see a much greater threat to the health of the population in drastic government measures than in covid-19 as such.
Petráček criticizes this initiative. “It simply came to our notice then. But our challenge is not a counter-challenge, it just uses data and common sense to deduce from it that now it is much worse than it was in the spring, when we took it seriously. And it needs to be taken seriously again, “he said. “I’m afraid those colleagues can’t read the data,” he added.
He agrees that the current situation poses various problems, but it is essential to prevent preventable deaths on covid-19. “The complex situation we have now brings burden, stress, neglect, of course. But the point is that the additional, unnecessary deaths that result from neglecting measures should not increase, “he emphasized.
In the Events and Comments, Petráček called on companies or other donors who would be willing to contribute financially to the new fans. “Please contact us at CTU if you would like to help,” he said.
