Italian Ambassador: Paraguay must invest in education

Asunción: The Italian Ambassador, Paolo Campanini, gave a final interview before returning to Italy and said that our country should use its demographic bonus to invest in education. This aims to achieve a good quality of life, a high level of development and full democracy.

Italian Ambassador Paolo Campanini, speaking to Radio Monumental, said that Paraguay should use its demographic bonus to invest in education, especially in the youth sector, which is worth investing in and which ultimately leads to a good quality of life, a high level of development and full democracy.

Appreciating the strengthening of bilateral ties and the shared roots between Italy and Paraguay, the man who is ending his diplomatic mission in the country said he fell in love with the country and made good friends.

“I had experience in Latin America but no experience in Paraguay, but I was told there were common roots with Italy and Europe that we should work on. There is a lot to do in culture, architecture and science. I leave with the knowledge that there is a lot to do. If we invest in these common roots, we have tremendous benefits for both countries, especially Europe and Mercosur,” he said.

On the other hand, he was asked about democracy in our country and the dangers that could threaten it. Campanini said very clearly that the greatest danger is believing that democracy equals hatred when it is a value that must be cultivated and cherished.

“It would be a shame not to recognize that she is a very valuable legacy, one that our fathers fought hard for and that must be defended every day through citizen participation. Everyone should feel the value of this heritage and this democracy as their own,” he said.

He did not comment on political issues, but recalled that in a democratic country it is normal to have moments of tension, but it is important that dialogue and political debates are conducted within the rules.

He concluded by pointing out that the complicated times of democracy are not a short-term perspective, but that an alliance between democracies should be promoted and defended as much as possible.

“It is necessary to promote an alliance between democracies and to defend it as much as possible so that it also reaches other countries that do not have it. No citizen wants to live under a dictatorship,” he said.

Paolo Campanini came to Paraguay in July 2020 from New York (USA), his previous place of work. After two years and seven months as ambassador, with a pandemic in between, he can now say he is leaving with the belief that Italy was, is and always will be at Paraguay’s side.
