Itaewon Halloween Tragedy News, 6 people targeted as suspects

Chief Yoon Hee Keun and Kim Kwang Ho were informed of the tragedy more than an hour after the incident and Lee Im Jae arrived late at the scene.

Regarding the identification of six suspects, including former Yongsan Police Chief Lee Im Jae and Ryu Mi Jin, who were head of the operations room of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency at the time of the incident.

Then two officers from the Yongsan Police Station intelligence team, the Yongsan District Bureau Chief, Park Hee Young, and the Yongsan Fire Chief, Choi Seong Beom.

The Special Investigation Division’s response is in line with President Yoon’s criticism of the police leadership for neglecting to listen to public reports prior to the tragedy.

There was also public criticism that the investigation only targeted low-ranking officials.

The offices on the upper levels are not to blame.

Last week a series of raids were carried out against eight organizations, but not including the offices of senior police officers.

Interior Minister Lee Sang Min remained steadfast in his position not to resign over the incident.

“There has been no request (calling for my resignation). I am ready to do my best to address issues like this,” Lee said when questioned at a National Assembly meeting on Tuesday.

Despite his claims, Lee has received requests to quit the opposition parties.

This is because he is the supreme commander of national security and disaster response, in charge of the police and firefighters.

“It’s more important to me to do what I have to do,” Lee said.

“The urgent priority for me is to face the tragedy and to take precautions so that tragedies like (what happened in Itaewon) do not happen again,” he added.

In addition, Yongsan Choi Fire Chief Seong Beom, who was included on the list of suspects for failing to respond adequately to the incident, has sparked controversy.

The reason is that it was found that the Yongsan Choi division did not respond adequately to the urgency of the scene at the time of the tragedy.

The Yongsan Fire Brigade Ambulance arrived at the scene later than the Jongno Fire Brigade Ambulance in the adjacent district.

Yongsan firefighters said the ambulance arrived late at the scene as it was treating other patients in the area.
