The Forgotten Billions online service allows people to find out if they own shares or dividends derived from them in coupon privatization in the 1990s. According to the author of the project, Daniel Surmar, people have up to ten billion crowns in their accounts. “The space for those who have not yet registered for free is still large. However, they should hurry with the examination. In the autumn, claims for one billion crowns will expire, “said Surmař.
The service is free until a person finds valuable shares. 80,000 people have already registered, with about one in five a success. The average age of the finders is 62 years, the oldest was 78 years. A 70-year-old woman from the Znojmo region was also lucky, the service helped her find 239,000 crowns.
“I read about the service on the Internet and I remembered that I had not settled part of my coupon investment in the past. At first there was no time for that and then I forgot about the coupon, including what kind of investment it was, “said the woman.
At the beginning of the coupon privatization, which began on October 1, 1991, every adult citizen could buy a coupon book and a stamp worth 1000 crowns and thus participate in the exchange of investment coupons for corporate shares. In both waves (from February 1992 to January 1993 and from October 1993 to December 1994), assets worth 368 billion crowns were privatized. The first wave of coupon privatization was attended by 5.98 million people and 264 investment funds, the second wave involved 6.16 million citizens and 353 funds.
