It works so badly it must be wrong

AMD’s new video cards, the 7900 XT and XTX, are both many thousands of dollars cheaper than the RTX 4080 and 4090.

The new cards will be launched on Tuesday, December 13

There may be a reason for this, if we are to believe the first few figures (and it’s not certain they are – sooner), because they also perform much worse. Better than Nvidia’s ray tracing performance was not expected, but in some cases the better card would be able to compete with the 4080.

This was also what AMD’s first figures revealed (see below): the 7900 XTX fell between 4080 and 4090 in terms of performance, and that for NOK 8000 (converted from dollars).

These are the Geekbench numbers (150,372 points – both boards tested with Ryzen 9 7950X) we have for the 7900 XTX. The card is 143.6% slower in the OpenCL test and the 4080 is also 65.5% faster.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new cards:

These numbers cannot match

It also turns out that in the Vulkan test, the top card does worse than the RTX 3090 ti, 3090, and even the AMD 6900 XT and 6800 XT.

In other words, there may (should) be errors in the Vulkan and/or OpenCL tests causing the card to perform so poorly. There’s also the possibility that the drivers are far from optimized, but there’s a large margin to be gained.

There’s no chance the cards are slower than AMD’s previous generation, the question is how wrong the test schedule is, but as mentioned, the margins aren’t entirely on the red team.
