The Olympia Law considers the classification of media violence, digital violence, as well as the sanction of the illicit figure of violation of sexual intimacy.
The initiatives began in 2018 and included various prevention and punishment schemes for digital violence that violated people’s privacy.
With this reform, cases of media violence and digital violence are typified within the Law of Access of Women to a Life Free of Violence for Hidalgo, as well as the illicit Violation of Sexual Intimacy, within the state Penal Code.
The Olimpia Law arose at the initiative of Olimpia Coral Melo, who at the age of 18 learned that an intimate video recorded with her ex-partner was circulating through WhatsApp. When trying to report to the Public Ministry of Huachinango, Puebla; the authorities responded that it was not a crime.
The activist began promoting law reforms in 2014 in different states, and they were named as the Olimpia Law; which entered into force in Mexico City on January 22, 2020.
The crime against sexual intimacy was added to the Penal Code as well as its sanction of four to six years in prison, in addition to 500 to 1000 Units of Measurement and Update, equivalent to between 44, 810 and 89, 620 pesos, to whoever disseminates content intimate without consent.
