It will be the longest expressway in Poland. Longer than A4. One episode is key

The S8 expressway connects large Polish cities and is a section of the European route E67. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) recalled the history of its construction and provided the latest status of the fragments under construction, as well as those in tender and in preparation. The target length of the “S-8” is to be approximately 786 km. For comparison, the A4 motorway is 670 km long, and the S7 road will be approximately 750 km long after completion.

The S8 road – partly in the trace of the former “gaming”

A large part of the new S8 – from Piotrków Trybunalski to Warsaw – runs along the track of the former “gierkówka” leading from the capital towards Katowice, called the mother of Polish highways (Find out more). Of course, in recent years the route has been thoroughly rebuilt.

Earlier, in 1998, the Radzymin bypass was built. The next bypasses along the current S8 route allowed to bypass Ostrów Mazowiecka (2003) and Oleśnica (2006). Further, GDDKiA informs about subsequent connections of the route into longer and longer routes. In 2012, the modernization from Piotrków Trybunalski to Radziejowice was completed, and at the end of 2013 it was possible to quickly travel from Wrocław to the Wieluń junction.

The year 2015 marked the end of works on the Grota Roweckiego bridge in Warsaw and the section between the Paszków and Opacz junctions was opened to traffic. You can travel from the capital to Białystok via the S8 road from October 2018.

Since then, S8 has been running through five voivodeships from Kobierzyce near Wrocław, including parts of the A8 (Wrocław Motorway Bypass), A1 (Tuszyn – Piotrków Trybunalski) and S2 (Opacz and Konotopa junctions).

The S8 road will be connected in the province. Łódź

After the reconstruction of the A1, a direct exit from the A1 towards Warsaw was made possible (new slip road at the Piotrków Trybunalski Zachód junction), but this does not solve the problem. To be completely happy, there is only one section in the very center of Poland. This is a connector that would connect the S8 route. For this reason, many drivers traveling on this route still choose the shorter route from the Łódź Południe junction through the Łódź Północ junction and further along the crowded A2 motorway to Konotopa.

The new investment is intended to relieve traffic on the A1 and A2 motorways. It is planned from the Łódź Południe junction (A1/S8) to the Kozenin junction (intersection with S12 and S74). In October 2023, GDDKiA selected a design office that will develop the route. The length of the entire connector is approximately 60 km, and the intersection with S8 will be approximately halfway there. An agreement with the contractor to develop a technical, economic and environmental study with elements of the program concept (STEŚ-R) is to be signed soon.

The S8 express route in southern Poland is to run all the way to the border with our southern neighbors, the Czech Republic. GDDKiA systematically carries out tasks leading to its extension. In July 2023, offers were opened in the tender for the construction of three sections from Kobierzyce near Wrocław to Łagiewniki with a total length of 32.5 km. Until the end of this year the management intends to sign contracts with contractors. Moreover, in October 2023, a tender was announced for the construction of the Ząbkowice Śląskie Północ – Bardo section (approx. 14 km). Another tender is to be announced this year for the section of S8 Łagiewniki – Ząbkowice Śląskie (approx. 17 km)

Preparatory works are being carried out for the section from Bardo to Kłodzko, and the analysis of its connection with the Złoty Stok bypass is currently underway. In total, the length of S8 from Wrocław to Kłodzko will be 87 km. It is planned to be made available to drivers over a wide period of time, between 2028 and 2033. GDDKiA informs that the Government Program for the Construction of National Roads (RBDK) until 2030 also includes the further construction of S8 to Boboszów and the border with the Czech Republic.

There is also a lot to do on the opposite section from Białystok towards Lithuania. In September 2023, the construction of the S8 route to the Raczki junction at the intersection with S61 was added to the PRBDK (approx. 90 km).

A section of S19 will be used from the new Białystok Zachód junction to Dobrzyniewo and then a section of S16 to Knyszyn. From there, S8 would follow a new track to Korycin. GDDKiA is preparing documentation to announce a tender for this approximately 20-kilometer section.

In the unspecified future, the following bypasses will become part of S8: Suchowola, Sztabin and Białobrzegi (currently on DK8), included in the Program for the construction of 100 bypasses. All of them will be built as single carriageway roads, but they have been designed so that it is possible to add a second line. The same will apply to sections between the ring roads and road No. 8 from Augustów to Raczki.
