Analogue technology has become very popular in photography in recent years, and more and more people have started taking photos on film with traditional cameras. And Kodak wants to bring the same fashion to the field of videography, which is why it created the new Super 8 camera, which became an analog and digital mule.
It was 2016, when Kodak first aired the idea that it would market a Super 8 camera again. The company announced the product at CES, and needless to say, nothing came of it. You could have thought that the project had been forgotten, but in 2018 there were again news that gave hope. However, the structure did not appear even then, and there was a longer break.
For 5 years, almost nothing could be heard about the development, but now it is here. And it’s really here! You can already sign up for the order list, but few people will be able to afford this kind of entertainment. Old Super 8 cameras can be obtained quite cheaply depending on their design and condition, but the subject of our news is a completely different story.
The new Kodak Super 8 camera costs $5,495.
When Kodak first talked about the device in 2016, it was thought that the price would be between 400 and 750 dollars. In 2018, it was rumored that the product would cost 2,500-3,000 dollars, but in the end it was twice as expensive.
The Super 8 camera will record the videos on classic tape, thanks to which the visual materials will offer a very special sight. However, the camera also handles an SD card, this is necessary because the structure cannot record sound, which is not possible with Super 8 film, so the sound will be recorded on the memory card in parallel with the videos. Digital technology comes into play here, but this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Kodak built a 4-inch display into the camera, which can be unfolded with a single movement and can be tilted for more comfortable use at any angle. Thanks to the great search engine, the videos will surely contain what the user wants to record. The optics are replaceable, the camera uses a C bayonet. It will come with a 6mm focal length lens. A very simple hand grip will ensure proper grip.
An external microphone can be connected to the device via a 3.5 mm Jack connector. There will also be real-time feedback on the sound on the LCD display, so the creator can be sure that the soundtrack will not be left behind next to the video. There is also a mini HDMI on the housing, thanks to which an external screen can be connected to the structure. Basically, the camera can be set to 24 and 25 FPS video recording, but 18 and 36 FPS options will also be available.
The finished product will look pretty much like it was announced by the company in 2016. At the time, it was also said that there would be a more curved, more modern version, but that has not materialized so far, those interested will get the square design. A lot of time has passed since then, and this can be felt on the device, as it can still be charged via a Micro USB connector, for example, but it did not receive a USB-C. Of course, anyone who buys Kodak Super 8 wants the retro feel…
The camera will not only be cheap to buy, but also to maintain. Looking around at home, you can find a ribbon for more than HUF 20,000, which is approx. 15 meters long. This is enough to record 3 minutes of video with a frame rate reduced to 18 FPS, if the user wants a more continuous recording, the tape will naturally end even faster. So you have to think carefully about what you record.
If the Super 8 business picks up again, the price of cassettes could perhaps drop somewhat, but we don’t think there is a realistic chance that this attempt will be successful. A very narrow circle will probably sign up for the product, but most people will prefer to achieve the retro effect with digital post-production, as they have done so far, if they wanted to. Or they buy a used Super 8 camera at a specialty store.
