SP-X/Berlin. For around 7.1 million drivers, car insurance could become more expensive next year. From next January, their vehicles will be in higher type classes for liability insurance, according to the industry association GDV. Around 5.1 million drivers, on the other hand, will benefit from a more favorable classification, while nothing will change for 30 million. However, large jumps within the type class hierarchy are the exception. The Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic and the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 1.5, for example, will improve by two classes, while the Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI Quattro will fall by three. The Peugeot 3008 HDI will be classified two classes lower in the future.
There are a total of 16 type classes (10 to 25) in motor vehicle liability insurance. The statistics are based on the costs caused to third parties by drivers of a certain car model in accidents. Type classes also exist in comprehensive insurance, where the costs of self-inflicted accidents and various other types of damage, such as broken glass, are taken into account. In addition to the type class, however, many other factors, such as changes to the no-claims bonus, also play a role in calculating the individual premium amount. A poorer type class classification does not necessarily mean that motor insurance for a certain vehicle will be more expensive in the coming year.
