Passengers on Royal Caribbean‘s Explorer of the Seas witnessed the joy with their own eyes when the cruise ship was hit by wind gusts of over 80 miles per hour and listed 45 degrees off the coast of Africa.
Panic reigned on the ship. Objects were shattered into a thousand pieces and passengers started texting their loved ones, thinking they were going to die.
41-year-old Canadian Dan Shaw recorded on video the efforts of those trying to stand up.

“The cruise ship was listing for five minutes”
“It was like the Titanic,” he told Kennedy News and Media, describing how he saw “people screaming and glasses breaking. Usually the waves make the ship rock, but here it leaned for five minutes to one side. He held his position for about three minutes.”
“I thought this could be the end and the ship will go down in the water. “I took my phone and texted my colleagues that I don’t know what’s going to happen and to be careful,” said Shaw, who was on his first cruise.
The ship made an unscheduled stop in Las Palmas to administer first aid to the injured, the ship’s owning company said.
“I was writing my last message thinking I was going to die,” Shaw said of watching the videos he recorded, which gave him “chills.” As he said, he feels that he has been given “a new life”.
