24-year-old Ostapenko shocked the world of tennis four years ago, also providing one of the greatest successes in Latvian sports – she won the French Open Championship, but in her career she has four WTA tournament winners, the last of them this year in Eastbourne.
Ostapenko already has experience as a flagship, as she also performed these duties at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing. She made her big Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. In Tokyo, Alona will participate in singles and doubles with Anastasia Sevastova.

As Marita Vilciņa, a representative of the Latvian delegation, told Latvijas Avīze, already on the first day we visited the gym in the Olympic Village, but from today we will go to trainings outside the Olympic Village. Arriving in Tokyo, all the formalities were quite smooth, only the results of the Covid-19 saliva test had to wait about an hour.
At least on the first day, living conditions are no different from other Olympics, the rooms are comfortable and neat, eating level. True, the largest influx of participants is still expected in the Olympic Village. Nevertheless, the first cases of Covid-19 have already been detected in the Olympic Village, as two South African football players have had positive analyzes.
There has also been a criminal offense in connection with the Olympic Games – a 30-year-old Uzbek citizen who is studying in Japan but would have worked as an assistant at the Olympic Games, raping a woman at the Olympic Stadium. The crime took place after the opening ceremony in the stadium stands.
