Jakarta –
China is predicted to experience a decline in population over the next 30 years. One of the reasons is because many young age groups do not plan to have children, even though incentives are offered from the government.
Quoted from DW, young people in China are starting to be pessimistic about their future. This has an impact on their attitude towards marriage and family.
“Young people in China generally feel that the future is bleak and life will be full of stress,” said 25-year-old woman, Emma Li, who lives in Shanghai, China, quoted from DW, Sunday (29/1/2023).
“Having children is a choice that will add to the stress in life. Many of us decide to be the ‘last generation’ in our family,” he continued.
According to Emma Li, seeing the condition of her country which is experiencing a decline in population still does not change her view of family. In fact, he said many of his friends also did not want to have children.
The cause of the declining desire of Chinese citizens to have a family and have children is also influenced by lifestyle factors. As Cynthia Liu (27) feels a lifestyle that is full of pressure and demands in everyday life.
“Long hours, unsatisfactory jobs and pressure to survive on low wages during inflation made it impossible for us to raise children,” said Cynthia Liu who lives in Beijing, China.
Seeing this, China observer and assistant professor of sociology at the University of Michigan says that more young women in China are focusing more on their careers and personal lives.
“Gender discrimination in China’s labor market and the extraordinary expectations of motherhood for women are obstacles that prevent them from getting married or having children,” she explained.
