Secretary General of PAN Eddy Soeparno talked about the direction of support PAN moment 2019 presidential election. Eddy said that PAN actually wants to join the coalition Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin but got caught Amien Rais.
“It happened two days before PAN announced the candidacy of Prabowo-Sandi before the presidential election. I spoke to Mas Hasto, ‘Mas, we will, God willing, join Mas Hasto’s coalition.’ However, because at that time we were vetoed, then we joined Prabowo-Sandi,” said Eddy in the Para Syndicate discussion, Friday (28/5/2021).
Eddy said the decision was in the hands of General Chairman Zulkifli Hasan. However, his party respected Amien Rais, who was still in PAN at the time.
“At that time, even though General Chairman Zulkifli Hasan, but of course we listened to our central figures, our central figures, our senior figures. At that time, what was his view and ours was really different from the views of other managers,” he said .
In fact, according to Eddy, PAN never had opposition DNA from the previous government. Eddy then admitted that he had been blasphemed by the internal party.
“Well, I said at the meeting that PAN does not have opposition DNA and I was frankly criticized a lot in our internal circles, ‘how come the secretary general is so brave to say PAN does not have opposition DNA?’ That’s how it is in my opinion. If other parties openly say they are opposition parties, people will believe it,” he said.
“If PAN says we are an opposition party, later we will be asked, ‘Which one? right? Why do you still like to be intimate with the government? How come you still like to work with the government coalition parties,'” he said.
As is known, in the 2019 presidential election there were only two pairs of candidates who contested, namely Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno and Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin. At that time, PAN supported the Prabowo-Sandiaga pair.
