“It surpasses even Rundāle Castle in size!” The historic war hospital will be transformed into the Office for the Protection of the Constitution – Society and Politics – News

“The Riga War Hospital is located almost in the center of the city – at the intersection of Upes, Invalidu and Hospitāļu streets, and it surpasses even Rundāle Castle in size,” Mārtiņš Ķibilds described the hospital in the program “Addresses” more than a year ago.

The origins of this historic building can be traced back to 1754, when the hospital was completed, but the current building was built shortly after Napoleon’s death in 1835. The authors of this U-shaped building of classicist architecture are Alexander Staubert and Johann Eduard de Vite.

At that time, the Riga War Hospital was one of the largest hospitals in the entire Russian Empire. The impressive building operated as an army medical institution until 2014, but later it stood empty, in a state of disrepair. Riga War Hospital is an architectural monument of national significance.

In a conversation with “Latvijas Radio”, the head of the Courthouse Agency Santa Sausiņa revealed that in the process of restoration, the Riga War Hospital will be preserved as a historical heritage.

No extensions will be made to the building or the volume of the historic house will be modernized. The facade of the building and its decorative elements will be completely restored, as far as possible the two-storey staircase, decorative murals and architectural details will be restored in the former Orthodox Church, which was transformed into a cinema during the Soviet era.

The Courthouse Agency also plans to maintain and revitalize the hospital park. The renovation of the historic building of the Riga Military Hospital is planned to be completed by 2023.
