American Nyjah Huston, who won third place in the street skateboarding final, went viral on social media. Huston received the bronze medal on July 29 and, as he complained, it has begun to “crack” and lose its color.
“These medals look great when they’re brand new. But after putting them on my skin with a little sweat and giving them to my friends over the weekend, I see they’re not as high quality as you think,” he said in a video he posted on Instagram.
In fact, he turned his medal over on the other side, saying: “Even the front started to wear a little. Maybe we need to improve the quality a bit,” he added.
Every medal awarded at the Paris Olympics has been designed by Chaumet. One side features a hexagonal symbol weighing 18 grams which is made from pieces of iron sourced from the Eiffel Tower.
The second depicts the goddess Nike, with the Acropolis on one side and the Eiffel Tower on the other. The bronze medal weighs 525 grams and is made of an alloy of copper, tin and zinc.
But according to Huston, “the medals are probably meant to be in cases”
