It really looks like China has banned Steam

  • The global version of Steam in China is unavailable
  • It may have just been a DNS attack
  • But it is more likely to have been banned by the government itself

China is known to strictly control what video games it allows its citizens to play, and it also offers only a version of Steam that contains only 103 government-approved titles. Because the Chinese version of Steam is extremely limited compared to other versions, some Chinese users use the global version of Steam to play. However, the global version of Steam seems to have been simply banned by the Chinese government. As reported by TheGamer and The Verge, a global version of Steam is currently unavailable in China. It is not yet clear whether the Chinese government has actually banned Steam or whether it has been intentionally shut down for some other reason, but it is also possible that the services were only stopped due to some kind of DNA attack. In any case, it wouldn’t be so surprising if it turns out that China has officially exiled Steam as the government has made many video games and services inaccessible over the years. Only this year, for example, did the Chinese government take steps to ban PUBG eSport and restrict the time minors in the country spend playing video games.
