Luis Pedroso, president of the Junta de Maximinos, Sé y Cividade, in the city of Braga, tested positive for covid-19.
The news was advanced by University Radio of Minho (RUM) and confirmed by O MINHO himself.
According to the mayor, speaking to our newspaper, he started to feel a slight fever last Tuesday, prompting him to immediately take steps to perform the test for the new coronavirus.
“I went home immediately when I realized I had more than 37 degrees of fever, I arranged to be tested in the late afternoon and on Wednesday I received the positive result”, he says.
“It seems that the sky fell on me,” he admits, revealing that he does not remember how he might have been infected. “Like anyone who is infected, I tried to make a backup of the last days, but I will be very sincere, I talk to many people every day, because of the function of mayor, and as such, I cannot identify”.
As a consequence, the employees at the Junta’s headquarters in Maximinos are all quarantined, as well as the family who lives with Luís Pedroso.
The junta building is also closed and should be disinfected in the next few days, and may reopen as early as next week. Until then, some urgency can be dealt with at the headquarters of the Junta da Sé, where there is an employee and another member of the executive to receive the ‘customers’.
“Mayors are also more prone to contagion”
Luís Pedroso has been, since the beginning of the pandemic, an avid driver of security measures enacted by the DGS, such as the use of a mask, disinfection and avoiding clusters.
“I think the mayors, given the proximity to the populations, are closer to being able to be infected. And in this, as in everything in life, you need to have a little luck ”, he laments, wishing, however, that“ the bad luck is only this ”, since he is practically asymptomatic.
“This proves that we have to be very attentive because, even with all the care, we run the risk of contagion”, he stresses.
Luís Pedroso, elected as an independent with the support of the Juntos por Braga coalition (PSD / CDS / PPM), foresees a “very complicated September”, given the “increase in cases” that have been registered.
“We are going to have a complicated September because the cases are increasing a lot. I will be very sincere, to the news that we have, the infected are young, from 20 to 39, who seem to eat covid, but the problem is when it comes to babies or the elderly, in homes, that’s when it’s complicated ”, vinca .
The mayor will remain in isolation for the next two weeks, but he leaves an appeal for the population to “not facilitate”. “I appeal to try to comply with the rules of the DGS as much as possible, I know that it is boring to wear the mask, but that makes the difference”, he highlights, also asking for attention to avoid contact of the hands with the mouth or nose.
