Bulgarian football legend and ball whiz Dimitiar Berbatov talks about his time as a Manchester United player.
After a brilliant start to his career at Old Trafford with 14 goals and 11 assists in his first season, he was surprisingly left out of both the eleven and match squad when Manchester Untied faced Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League Final.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has instead put Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez in charge, with Michael Owen on the bench and Berbatov in the stands.
– I remember Ferguson called me and said: “Berbs, it’s killing me, but I have to leave you off the team.” That was painful to hear. I was very surprised, says Berbatov Manchester Evening News.
– It was hard to handle. I was fit, confident and felt like I could score from anywhere. Finally I tried to understand the decision. Someone had to be sacrificed and choosing a coach wasn’t easy. I saw how difficult it was for Sir Alex to break the news to me, says the Bulgarian coach.
Berbatov stresses that he apologized to Ferguson for being wrecked in the 2011 Champions League final, which incidentally Barcelona won 3-1, and says the relationship with the Scottish managerial legend is good today.
