The government representative hid behind the words when asked by Documentonews, regarding the decision of the Tripartite Court of Criminal Appeals, to acquit the former minister of PASOK, Giannos Papantoniou, of the felony charges of money laundering from illegal activity by pursuit and by profession .
To the question raised about the judicial crisis, and also the argument that the 2.5 million euros found in the possession of Giannos Papantoniou was sent by his aunt from Nigeria, Pavlos Marinakis said that “it is unthinkable to comment on judicial decisions , so I will do the same in this case.”
In fact, in a second question on the specific issue, he added that “citizens have every reason to ask questions, but it is not the government’s job to comment on judicial decisions.”
It is noted that the judges during the hearing determined that there was not enough evidence to establish beyond any doubt the commission of the crime of bribery and infidelity which are already time-barred and were not examined in the audience, bringing with it the crime of money laundering. In essence, the court ruled that since there is no basic crime, there is no money laundering for which he was accused.
“There are doubts about the basic offenses of passive bribery and infidelity (time-barred), there was insufficient evidence, and therefore he is acquitted due to doubts about the money laundering he is accused of,” said the president of the court.
