In the car world, there is a jungle of different brands and body shapes. Traditionally, the station wagon and sedan sit on top of the most typical bodies, in addition to the coupe, but you can also buy a station wagon with 3 or 5 doors, pickup or convertible.
In recent years, however, it has become a more upright variant that has characterized the top-seller lists both here at home and globally, namely the SUV.

Most sold cars in Norway
The abbreviation SUV stands for sport utility vehicle, or sports and commercial vehicle in Norwegian. It is characterized by being high-rise and often combined with four-wheel drive. In Norway, the term became widespread around the 2000s, when market share began to rise. In any case, SUVs are not a new phenomenon and the models have been on the market for decades.
SUV sales also characterize the sales lists in Norway. From New Year to the end of April, the best-selling cars in Norway were the SUVs Toyota Rav4 (3359 cars), Volvo XC40 (2863) and Volkswagen ID.4 (2684). Last year’s best-selling car was also an SUV, namely the Audi e-Tron.
Despite the fact that they are high-rise and many have four-wheel drive, many of the models are best suited for paved roads, or a well-maintained gravel road, so what exactly is an SUV? The guys in the Motor Pod are trying to answer that.

– What exactly is an SUV, because now everything is an SUV, asks car expert and podcast host Marius Mørch Larsen.
The car expert points out that it was not about the SUV when he was little, but that the expression became more and more common with BMW. Finansavisen’s Motor journalist and co-host of Mile after Mile, Håkon Sæbø, adds that the Mercedes ML also made a strong contribution to the SUV wave.
– I’m starting to wonder if the whole SUV concept is irrelevant, says Mørch Larsen.
