It is essential to recover dialogue and trust in the Iguala case: UN-DH

Mexico City. In the Ayotzinapa case, “the extreme seriousness of what happened, the unsatisfactory results – thus recognized by all the actors – and the perseverance of the families (of the missing normal students) make it essential to recover dialogue, reestablish trust and adopt renewed actions that allow us to fully clarify what happened, reveal the truth and punish all the people who participated by action or omission in the events,” stated the Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH).

While greeting the “important” meeting held between the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the parents of the students, on July 29, he stressed that “frank and constructive dialogue is essential to reverse the current state of the process and generate tangible results.

“At UN-DH we recognize the efforts deployed by those public servants who have committed themselves to the search for truth and justice and we stand in solidarity with those who have faced unacceptable negative consequences for their determination. We encourage the State as a whole—both civil and military authorities—to overcome the obstacles that have prevented the achievement of the desired objectives,” he stated in a statement, within the framework of the 10 years since the disappearance of the 43 normal students in Iguala, Warrior.

Likewise, he recognized the “unbreakable” dignity of families. The mothers and fathers, he explained, continue to clearly and firmly demand the only objective that has driven them from day one: to find their children and ensure that justice is done, punishing those responsible.

The UN-DH pointed out that the case of the Ayotzinapa normalistas illustrates the challenges that the State faces to protect people against forced disappearances, for which it reiterated the call to adopt a vigorous agenda, based on ten priority issues, that promotes the solutions that victims and their families deserve, taking into account the specific nature of each case.

Likewise, in view of the great march that is planned for this afternoon, led by the parents of the students and that will leave from the Angel of Independence to the capital’s Zócalo, he called for the mobilizations and expressions of solidarity of this day “to be carried out within of the proper channels of a democratic society in which the right to peaceful assembly is exercised, respected and protected.”

Finally, the UN-DH reaffirmed its commitment to continue accompanying the families of the disappeared normalistas and the authorities who are willing to materialize truth and justice.
