The genomic approach, precision oncology and personalized therapy were aspects discussed by the panelists during the III Medical Congress “Genetics, cancer and something”, held at the City of Health.
One of them, Mexican specialist Carmen Alaez Verson, indicated that it is important to carry out studies early, when one has some type of predisposition to hereditary cancers, especially in the case of women, with regard to breast and ovarian cancers.

“If there is a possibility of having this condition in other family members, it is essential to carry out the respective studies,” said Alaez Verson.
Meanwhile, Colombian geneticist Juan Javier López explained that, although 80 percent of positive cases are sporadic, it is necessary to perform tests to rule out that a person with a family history of cancer has the disease.
This will allow us to certify whether or not the person has this condition and, if the result is positive, to begin treatment on time, Lopez said.

“In Panama, we have made significant progress in both diagnosis and treatment,” the specialist said.
