The medical team at the Park rescued Christian Eriksen. Federation captain Kasper Hjulmand talks about the dramatic evening and the nasty scenes. “It was a traumatic experience,” he says according to the Danish press.
Saturday 12 June was supposed to be a Danish football party. It was the exact opposite in the European Championship premiere against Finland.
The medical staff at the Park saved Christian Eriksen’s life. The Danish star is in hospital in Copenhagen and must, according to the circumstances, be in a stable position.
The Danish national team captain Kasper Hjulmand describes his feelings after the final signal to DR.
– I told the guys that I have been proud a few times, but this was such a moment. How the players were able to gather at all is a mystery to me. It did everything they could in a completely insignificant half.
Denmark entered the European Championships as a challenger to go really far. After the premiere night, the chances have shrunk – if it matters at all.
– It is completely pointless to talk about football. We will try to gather and we hope that Christian a situation where a really good friend has hovered between life and death, says Hjulmand.
Wanted to get it over with
Extra Bladet writes that Denmark had to play the match. Uefa did not give a canceled match as an option.
– It would have been impossible for the players to go to the hotel, be sleepless all night and then get on the bus to finish the match on Sunday. Honestly, it was about getting it over with. That was what the players chose together, says Hjulmand according to the newspaper.
– It was a traumatic experience. There were players in the locker room who were completely emotionally finished.
The Danish team captain Simon Kjær was praised for his actions. He quickly arrived at Eriksen, arranged a player ring around his teammate and was also present at Eriksen’s wife and hugged her.
In the second half, the midfielder could not take it anymore and he was replaced.
– He hesitated to continue and it did not work. He was deeply moved. I have a hard time imagining how I would have managed to play a match, says Hjulmand.
Denmark will process everything that happened in the coming days. They play their next match in the European Championship against Belgium on Thursday.
