We have already informed you that some Hyundai and Kia vehicles are “easy targets” for car thieves. Now, however, the US Road Safety Insurance Institute has pinpointed the exact reason for the high number of Korean car thefts.
Most often, car thieves steal Hyundai and Kia produced in the period from 2015 to 2019, and the reason is that many of these cars are not equipped with an electronic immobilizer that blocks the ignition system in case of theft.
“Our research shows that since the advent of immobilizers, the number of car thefts has dropped dramatically.” Unfortunately, Hyundai and Kia are lagging behind other automakers when it comes to standard immobilizers, “explains Matt Moore. Senior Vice President of Highway Loss Data Institute.
Many models produced in the specified years have immobilizers only in their high trim levels. In the basic and medium equipment levels they have no immobilizers and the thieves know this very well. The problem is already solved, because from November 1, 2021, Korean brands have made the electronic immobilizer part of the standard equipment of all their vehicles.
However, the problem remains for cars produced and sold without immobilizers. If your car is not equipped with an immobilizer, experts recommend retrofitting it with an additional anti-theft system – the longer a thief has to deal with electronics, the more likely he is to prefer another car.
