MSD Animal Health announces that an additional indication has been granted for the BOVILIS vaccine® INtranasal RSP® live in the European Union. The intranasal live vaccine can now be used in calves from the day of birth for active immunization against bovine respiratory diseases (RBD) in Spain.
Behind the approval procedure decentralized, all the countries of the European Union in which BOVILIS® INtranasal RSP® is authorised, they have updated their national registers. In the case of Spain, it has been a reality since July 2022.
BOVILIS® INtranasal RSP® It is the only vaccine authorized in the European Union against SRB that can be administered to the calf from the day of its birth. It allows farmers and veterinarians to have greater flexibility when planning vaccinations on the farm, in addition to protecting the calf earlier against bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and parainfluenza virus 3 (PI3) in a single intranasal vaccine. The onset of immunity against BRSV begins six days after dosing for newborn calves and five days after dosing for one-week-old calves. The duration of immunity is 12 weeks.
“Bovine respiratory syndrome is a major threat to the health and welfare of calves that can cause pneumonia and permanent lung damage. Being one of the main causes of morbidity in cattle populations around the world, it causes significant economic losses in the dairy and beef industries,” says Laura Elvira, technical director of ruminants at MSD Animal Health in Spain.
“Unlike other vaccination methods, intranasal vaccination remains effective in the presence of maternal antibodies found in colostrum – which a calf ingests from its mother during its first days of life – allowing it to be effective when administered to a newborn animal. bovilis® INtranasal RSP® it is the only vaccine that can be administered to calves from the day they are born, offering the earliest protection against SRB”, adds Elvira.
