(CNN) — The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described the program on Tuesday Covax -which distributes vaccines against covid-19 in poor countries- as “a painful and complete failure” during his speech at the United Nations Security Council in New York.
“While private pharmaceutical companies have sold 94% of vaccines, the Covax mechanism created by the UN for poor countries has barely distributed 6%, a painful and resounding failure,” López Obrador said on Tuesday.
“This simple fact should lead us to admit the obvious: in today’s world, generosity, the sense of the common, are being displaced by selfishness and private ambition, the spirit of cooperation loses ground in the face of profit, and with we slide from civilization to barbarism, “he said, speaking of corruption.
López Obrador added that if these trends cannot be reversed with concrete actions, “we will not be able to solve any of the other problems that hurt the peoples of the world.”
Mexico assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in November and this is López Obrador’s second trip abroad since he took office in 2018.
