Holy Saturday is the sixth day of Holy Week after Easter, when the Mother of God and the holy apostles are celebrated every day.
The week is so named because Christ brings enlightenment and hope for eternal life to all men. It is also called empty because of the prohibition to do any work, as well as New Sunday, because with it begins the cycle of Sundays that mention the resurrection of Christ.
According to the church calendar on Holy Saturday, St. John is worshiped. Because the Sabbath is dedicated to the dead, people hand out prosphoras and red eggs in memory of recently deceased loved ones.
During this day, women should not wash or wash, so as not to irritate the soap suds in the eyes of the dead. They do not cut and sew clothes, because whoever wears such clothes will die.
The bright week ends with Tomina Sunday, in the name of St. Apostle. Thomas, who was the only one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who did not believe in Christ’s resurrection. On this day the Gospel reading is read about the appearance of Christ to His disciples, among whom was the Apostle Thomas – one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, who did not believe in Christ’s Resurrection.
When the rumor of the Lord’s body disappearing from the tomb spread, the only apostle Thomas did not believe in this sign and asked to see for himself by touching the wounds from the nails of the crucified Jesus. Eight days after the Resurrection, Christ appeared before Thomas, and so he convinced himself of the truth, fell on his knees, and begged God to forgive him.
