“It has always been the dream”

IFK Gothenburg talent Oscar Vilhelmsson, 17, has this year made his first appearances in the Allsvenskan. After five innings during the season, he had to make his first start this week, when it was a 2-0 loss at home against Kalmar FF at Ullevi.

Vilhelmsson is disappointed with the loss, but happy that he got to start the match.

– It has always been a dream to start in the Allsvenskan at Ullevi. I would rather have won and all that, but that’s the way it is. It was fun, he says to Fotbollskanalen.

Vilhelmsson had family and friends on site during the match and got a good position to score his first Allsvenskan goal, but shot close outside Lucas Hägg-Johansson’s right post.

– I must have released it a bit. It was a pity it did not go to the finish line, but you can not change it now. I have not thought much about it.

Vilhelmsson thinks it was fun to play with veteran Marcus Berg.

– It is clear that it is a dream and it helps a lot. It’s nice because he’s good and experienced. He is a good player to have next to him, who can coach one. That’s great, says the talent.

The 17-year-old does not know why he got the chance to start against Kalmar, but says that he learned a lot during this year’s season.

– I would say that I have gained more experience. It’s something completely new to meet big, adult people instead of playing with U19 and so on. That is what you have developed the most, just to gain experience, he says.

During the pre-season, Vilhelmsson was praised by Simon Thern, who said that the talent has “a left-hander who is unparalleled” and that “it can explode” for the striker if he only gets everything in place. The question is whether Vilhelmsson himself feels that he is close to a breakthrough?

– Yes, it’s clear when I get to play, you believe in yourself. I hope and believe that it can explode, it would be strange otherwise, but then you will see when it happens. I hope and believe in it.

Are you happy with the playing time you got this year?

– I would definitely say that I am satisfied. I have gained experience. I have been replaced in matches and now I have also started. It is cruel.

Despite the fact that Vilhelmsson has not made as many matches this year, he stated GT recently that the Danish big club Brøndby is chasing talent. Vilhelmsson does not focus on that.

– It’s fun, but I focus on Blåvitt. This is where I have my focus.

How do you feel about leaving early versus waiting a couple of years?

– Yes, I think it depends on how it goes for me here. I probably can not answer that.

Blåvitt has also had a hard time this year and is now in twelfth place in the table with one point down to Degerfors in qualifying place in the Allsvenskan. Vilhelmsson believes that the team must continue to train hard to get a turnaround.

– There is not much more you can do than work hard on training and be focused. It’s just to wear, in the end it will well drop.

On Friday night, an important away match against Elfsborg awaits at Borås Arena – and Blåvitt needs three points to leave the worst bottom battle.

– It is an important match, so it would be nice with three points. We will do everything we can to win the match, he says.

Vilhelmsson will be 18 years old on Saturday and hopes to bring a positive feeling into the birthday celebration.

– It would have been good, says the talent.
