It drowns neighborhoods and spreads epidemics.. Gaza is threatened by the “Radwan Pool” flood

The Gaza City municipality is awaiting with great concern a flood in the Sheikh Radwan pond, which has been filled with wastewater and rainwater. Which will lead to the submergence of entire neighborhoods and the spread of many epidemics, insects, and rodents.

According to statements by Hosni Muhanna, spokesman for the Gaza City municipality, to Sky News Arabia, the danger is caused by the water level reaching a critical level after the rain accumulated, and the sewage pumping stopped due to the interruption of the fuel needed to operate the pumps, and the bombing of several conveyor lines.

What is feared is what will happen if the water level in Sheikh Radwan Pool continues to rise, as Muhanna says:

  • Major losses of life and property occur in the event of a flood; Due to the presence of a dense population center in the north of Gaza City.
  • Epidemics and diseases spread widely within a few days.
  • The spread of rodents and insects is abundant; Which threatens a major health and environmental disaster in a short time.
  • Entire neighborhoods drowned with excessive water flow, especially with the onset of winter and the rainy season.
  • Treating the consequences of the flood will take months and years to get rid of its effects.

To avoid these crises, a spokesman for the Gaza City municipality calls for a significant saving of fuel within hours to restart the pumps that draw water from the pond.

Israel must also stop bombing the city; To enable workers and municipal engineers to withdraw water and carry out emptying work, says Muhanna, appealing through Sky News Arabia to the United Nations, the International Red Cross and other international organizations to intervene urgently before the pond overflows and thousands of homes are drowned in an area very crowded with citizens.

The beginning of the rainy season and the possibility of floods have increased fears of the exhaustion of the sewage network in the besieged, densely populated sector, and the spread of diseases, especially since the absence of fuel has caused the closure of sewage and water desalination plants.

A glimmer of hope

In recent hours, there was hope in the Gaza Strip for a solution to the fuel crisis. Where Israel and the Hamas movement reached a truce agreement stipulating a cessation of fighting for 4 days, to allow the release of 50 Israeli hostages held in Gaza, including women and children, in exchange for the release of 150 Palestinians in Israeli prisons, as well as the entry of humanitarian aid, including hundreds of trucks of food, medicine and fuel, into the Strip. .

Israel has been refusing the entry of fuel into Gaza since the start of the war last October. Tightening its siege on the Gaza Strip, it agreed to enter very small quantities in the last days after regional and international pressure.
