It could be one of the biggest storms in years

A winter storm watch is in effect for the city from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday noon, a storm that Mayor Bill de Blasio said could be the “largest in years.”

The blizzard is expected to bring the heaviest snowfall in nearly five years (the last time that much snow fell was in January 2016).

The projections speak of more than a foot (30 centimeters) of snow falling.

“Be prepared for a disruptive storm and start making adjustments right now for what you will be doing on Wednesday and Thursday,” de Blasio said at a snow briefing.

“This could be one of our biggest storms in years,” added the mayor.

The National Weather Service has also issued an alert about the snowfall -which will affect not only the city but the entire tri-state region- and recommended taking precautions such as not driving starting on Wednesday afternoon.

“Much of the region will see 8 to 12 inches (20 to more than 30 cm) of snow with areas near New York City and areas to the northwest with 12 to 18 inches possible from tonight through tomorrow,” noted the Service in a message on social media.

The city’s Sanitation department, for its part, said it was prepared for the snowfall with its trucks to throw salt on the streets as well as other vehicles to remove snow. The department posted a message on social media with a video showing the operations.

If you have errands or errands to run, it’s best to run them in the morning. Snow will spread from the southwest at the end of the day with the greatest possibility approaching 6 p.m.

Most of the snow will fall overnight and then gradually decrease in the morning until Thursday afternoon.

There will also be wind, especially near the shore. Wind gusts can sometimes reach 30 to 40 miles per hour, causing snow and poor visibility.
